From Industrial Engineering to Kids Furniture
Eighteen years ago, I was working in industrial engineering when an opportunity arose to join a patio furniture company. Here I was overseeing sourcing, contracting, developing designs, prototyping, and most importantly, managing quality directly with manufacturers.
My engineering background taught me that quality isn’t an accident. It requires a systematic approach to identifying what needs attention, then checking and measuring it as much as possible. In furniture manufacturing, this attention to detail makes the difference between pieces that last and those that fail.
The Modern Tots Beginning
My wife Carmen and I started Modern Tots focusing on toys and kids accessories with a few pieces of furniture. But we quickly noticed something troubling: there was a serious lack of well-made furniture for children. There were just a few that we thought looked well designed, but they were VERY expensive. And, most were cheaply and poorly made.
That’s when I made the decision to leave the outdoor furniture company and apply my manufacturing expertise specifically to kids furniture. Our first piece was a table and stool set that we designed with two requirements: it had to be styled well enough for our living room, and constructed well enough for adults to interact with confidently.
Quality You Can Trust
For that first table and stool set, we chose birch plywood and made it thicker than the standard thin panels used by most, for added strength. We used mortise and tenon construction – joinery methods that most parents have never heard of but represent superior craftsmanship. When we explained these choices to customers, they appreciated understanding why these decisions mattered for their families.
Why Experience Matters More Than Ever
Over these 18 years, I’ve watched the kids furniture market transform. Parents today have more options than ever before – which has made them more skeptical, and rightfully so because almost all of them market their products as “high quality”, but that can’t be true for all of them. Here’s what I’ve observed that concerns me:
- Certifications aren’t what parents think they are – many sound impressive but lack the rigor parents assume
- Manufacturing shortcuts are increasingly common – corners get cut in ways that aren’t visible to customers
- Marketing claims are false more often – companies make promises their products can’t keep
Frankly, I’ve become more skeptical too. After 18 years of seeing how furniture is actually made, working directly with manufacturers and also doing our own manufacturing in-house, and understanding what separates quality construction from marketing fluff, I know what to look for – and what red flags to avoid.
