Shopping for a kids’ table usually comes down to two kinds of options: MDF and particleboard, or wood so thin the table feels temporary. Plenty of them are also built around one toy, so they stop getting used once the kids move on. Nobody wants to buy a table twice, and you’d like to know what it’s made of before it comes into your house.
We ran into the same thing with our own kids, which is why we started ModernTots in 2009. Kids’ furniture should be made as carefully as anything else in your home. So we designed this table with thicker birch, no formaldehyde-based glue, and a water-based, low-VOC finish.
Those details matter with a kids’ table. It gets leaned on, bumped, spilled on, and pushed around the room. MDF swells when it gets wet, and particleboard screw holes loosen over time. Birch is a hardwood, and thicker panels don’t flex the way thin ones do.
The open top matters just as much. Kids go through phases: building bricks for a while, then trains, then puzzles, coloring, or some long-running setup involving every stuffed animal they own. The table works for all of them.
If your kids build with bricks, add the brick-compatible plate. Add the rolling drawer and the tracks, bricks, and crayons have somewhere to go when playtime’s over. The kids get a spot that’s theirs, and you get your floor back.
The design is simple on purpose. No cartoon graphics, no printed roads, nothing that looks like it came from a toy store aisle. If you’re setting up a Montessori-style space at home, it fits right in. It’s real wood, it’s not visually busy, and your child decides what to work on. It can sit in the living room without taking over, and that’s usually where the playing happens anyway.
It’s a good grandparent gift, too. Kids have plenty of toys. A good place to play with them is harder to come by.
